In 2021, I had the opportunity to be part of the Building Leaders and Creators (BLAC) Program. Within the program, I was able to intern at O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul (OKRP). The program helped me shape my creative skills from an advertising standpoint and gave me a better understanding of how similar creative advertising can be. Being in that internship program gave me the ability to build my writing, pitching, and presentation skills.
In the daytime, we would be with our cohort groups and come up with a solution for a P&G client’s problem. The clients were Royal Oils and Olay, respectfully. Each had a different problem, but had an ultimate goal of how to get a wider audience in my Gen Z community. And in the second half, we would be shadowing in our own ad agencies, learning about the different departments of advertising.
For the pitch deck presentations, I was a huge contributor for creating moodboards and copywriting. As most of these clients were catered to audiences outside of my own racial identity, it became an exciting challenge as I learned to become a better ally for the Black community and educate myself of how I can stand up and speak up in solidarity.
In early 2022, during my time in my Radio Production I: Intro class, we were assigned to write different radio spot concepts weekly and record them. Concepts included retail, concert, and movie spots. I had a lot of fun writing copy for various interests that I liked in a marketing and promotional perspective.
